Ride A Steam Train Covered In Fairy Lights This Christmas

We love illuminations, and we double love trains, so we're thrilled that Light Fantastic is returning to the Epping Ongar Railway this Christmas.

After its 2020 run was curtailed by lockdowns and Covid restrictions, Light Fantastic is back with another chance to ride a special illuminated train on this heritage railway, beginning at North Weald station.

Ogle the train from the outside before boarding, then sit back and enjoy trackside illuminations from the windows as you wind through the Essex countryside on the one-hour trip, with a soundtrack of festive tunes. Basically, it'll be like starring in your own version of the Coca-Cola lorry advert, with added trains.

Covered in colourful illuminated trails, the train looks like Santa's elves threw up on it — and we mean that in the most magical way possible. The pulsating light snake will be hauled by either a steam or diesel locomotive, ensuring the train geek box is firmly ticked too.

Look out for trackside illuminations while on board the train

Unsurprisingly, December dates are largely sold out, but at time of writing you can still choo-choo-choose from excursions in November, late December or early January. If you do miss out on tickets and you live nearby, we're told it's worth trying to catch a glimpse of the train on its route (from a safe distance — no messing about near the tracks, please).

Epping Ongar Light Fantastic 2021 takes place 19 November 2021-9 January 2022. Tickets are £20 per person, and selling fast.
