Towering skyscrapers gleaming in the sun, church ruins overrun with foliage, world-class street art — what do you see when you think about the Square Mile?

With life in the City of London returning to normal at last, you're invited to hit the streets and capture the magic of this historic area as part of the City of London Corporation's Picture the City photography competition.

Whether you're an aspiring street photographer or are just looking for something different to do with your family, this is your chance to see the Square Mile in a whole new light — and possibly snag yourself an exclusive one-to-one photography tutorial in the process.

Not sure where to start? The following five categories set out by the judges should give you some inspiration:

  • Nature in the City — inner-city flora, fauna, and wildlife.
  • Lights of the City — the stunning lights of the City, both natural and artificial.
  • Architecture of the City — the City's iconic buildings.
  • The City Community — the sense of community that persists in the city, despite not being able still may not be able to get as close to each other as usual
  • Young City of London Photographer — for entrants 17 years old and under.

Once you've found that perfect shot, entering the competition couldn't be simpler. Just share your photo to Instagram using the hashtag #PictureTheCity for the chance to be judged by a curated panel of photographers.

This year's judges include renowned women's photographer Hannah Starkey, street photography expert Nick Turpin, and Instagram  Emmanual Cole (@ecolephoto) and Heather Cole (@geminatrix), who have a combined total of 150k+ followers.

If your photograph is a hit with the judges, you could take home the grand prize — an exclusive, one-to-one photography tutorial with Nick Turpin, who has authored numerous street photography books and whose work has been exhibited in world-famous institutions such as the Museum of London.

Other prizes will be announced as the competition progresses, and the deadline for entries is  Sunday, 20 June. Keep in mind that your photographs must show something in the Square Mile (you can review the area's boundaries here).
