Labour candidate Rosena Allin-Khan — a junior A&E doctor — has won the Tooting by-election to become the new MP for Tooting.

Allin-Khan won 17,894 votes (55.9%), with a majority of 6,357, and will fill the shoes of her predecessor, Sadiq Khan.

Conservative candidate Dan Watkins came second with 11,537 votes.

Allin-Khan's win was muted by the news of Labour MP Jo Cox's tragic death.

There was no victory speech, but instead a short tribute from Allin-Khan, in which she said: "Jo's death reminds us that our democracy is precious but fragile - we must never forget to cherish it."
