Pancake Races In London This Shrove Tuesday

There's batter-based entertainment in London this Pancake Day. From Lords a-flipping to bankers getting battered, there's a choice of pancake fun for everyone.

Here are our pick of pancake races this Tuesday, so you can get involved even if your flipping technique is a load of crepe.

Rehab Parliamentary Pancake Race

It's Parliament plus pancakes in this race at Westminster

This one means serious batter-business. The Parliamentary Pancake Race is nearly 20 years old and has Lords, MPs and media teams flinging their pans round Victoria Gardens in a bid to be the best tosser. It's in support of disability charity, Rehab, and participation comes with its own tongue-in-cheek Rules Of Engagement in the Race Programme. Watch the runners assemble from 9.45am.

The Great Spitalfields Race

Grab your team, a form of fancy dress (there's a prize for the best ones) and go racing down Dray Walk in aid of London Air Ambulance. Flip, flick or whatever you do, to the finish line and a free hot pancake. If you'd rather just watch others get battered, cheering crowds are strongly encouraged too. It starts at 12.30pm.

Better Bankside Pancake Day Race at OXBO

With an all-you-can-eat pancake prize, Bankside businesses are lining up to take part in this toss-off. Teams of four can get down to the Marlborough Sports Garden to test their wrist action. This year's race supports local charity Painting in Hospitals. Pancake purveyors are welcome to watch (and spin a few too) and there's a pancake stall to get your flipping fill. Races take place from 12.30pm.

Livery Companies Pancake Day Races

It's all charge at this Guildhall pancake race.

Each heat kicks off with a bang from the Gunmakers livery as 21 teams of four race around Guildhall Yard to win frying pan trophies. Organised by the Poulter's Company (who donate the eggs too), pancake making essentials are supplied by other livery companies — even the Clockmakers get involved in timing each race. Flipping kicks off at noon with all team members running in their regalia or chosen fancy dress. You can only take part if you're in a Livery company associated with making pancakes, but it's a colourful one to watch. First race is from 12pm.

Leadenhall Market Pancake Race

City law and banking firms charge into Leadenhall Market for this race through the stalls. Starting at the Lamb Tavern, crepe competitors flip their way around the 14th century market hall to win free pancakes and a pan-shaped award. Challengers can register their teams with the Lamb Tavern and fight for the title of Champion Pancake Flippers. Races start at 12pm.

Flipping Marvellous London Bridge City Pancake Race

Flipping Marvellous racing at The Scoop

A three-part challenge of treasure hunt, race and flip-off, London Bridge City invites pan-wielding teams of three to join the Flipping Marvellous Pancake Race. Compete for the crown of Biggest Flipper and raise money for London Bubble's Youth Theatre makers. Your team must be able to raise £250 to join in, but watching is free if you're near SE1's The Scoop. The flipping begins at 12.30pm.

Or just eating

If munching unlimited pancakes is more your style, how about all-you-can-eat pancakes and a glass of prosecco for £14 at OXBO Bankside. They have just about every topping you can think of, including popping candy. Open from 6.30am for those who like their breakfast battered.
