Art, Straight From The Heart: The Other Art Fair 2014

The third week of October is a massive week in the London art scene as major art collectors and galleries from around the world send their representatives to our city to look out for the next big thing in emerging and developing artists. Many art fairs will also pop up at this time including the behemoth that is Frieze London. But it would be wrong to focus just on Frieze, because The Other Art Fair will be on at the same time and is definitely worthy of your attention.

Talk to artists directly

All the artists at the other art fair are not represented by galleries, which means you don't have to go through any intermediaries. They will be at their stands ready to discuss anything you want to know about their artworks, including how it's made and what it means to them.

And if you decide to take the plunge and make a purchase then there's no middle man to take a cut. This means the proceeds go directly to the artist, and you may get a cheaper price than if you bought it from a gallery.

Track record

You may be thinking that buying from an unrepresented artist could be a gamble but the track record of this art fair has been exemplary over the last few years, with the line-up getting better every time. Regular attendees do return but the list of participating artists is continually refreshed by ensuring that there is a new selection panel every time.

Previous judges on the panel have included eminent artists Tracey Emin and Yinka Shonibare, while this time the selection committee includes acclaimed taxidermist Polly Morgan and renowned collector and supporter of emerging art Anita Zabludowicz.

This edition will be held at the Old Truman Brewery within the heart of the East End's arts sector surrounded by great places to grab a bite before or after visiting the fair. There will also be a list of art-related activities to take part in during the run of the event.

The other art fair is a bi-annual highlight of the London art calendar and is an opportunity to see and buy from emerging artists at reasonable prices.
