Preview: Elefest 2012

Enjoy a cracking weekend's worth of art, film, food and gardening set in venues that have all been challenged by or survived demolition at Elefest this weekend.

The annual creative community festival focuses around the Walworth Road and fantastically, all events and activities are free to attend:

Explore the Heygate and Pullens estates hosting outdoor art courtesy of the eight artists participating in the Estate Art project. Meet the artists, watch them create, perform and respond to the unique settings (Heygate 3-6pm, Pullens 6-9pm each day).

The former Shell filling station on Walworth Road will be enlivened by the StockMKT night market and ace street food stalls on Friday and Saturday nights and rejuvenated by the outdoor underground skate film festival on Sunday afternoon, with a temporary skate park installed and graffiti artists and music on hand.

Hotel Elephant in the Heygate Estate will open as a gallery space and be filled with an exhibition by artists who have worked in or about the Elephant. Watch out for Elsie the fire breathing robotic dragon, open studios, a big pot of food, DJs and live music.

Linking the Shell station and Hotel Elephant, find the Mobile Gardeners Park on Wansey Street and help plant a sofa, adopt a box for seed planting and be part of creating a pavement mural.

Watch vintage London films in the Electric Elephant Cafe on Friday from 6pm.

Join a community lunch at the Shell station on Saturday as local groups bring dishes to the table that represent their communities or culture.

And when it gets dark, watch out for the disco lights on the Michael Faraday Memorial in the middle of that roundabout.

Elefest runs Friday 5 - Sunday 7 October. Find out more about the area and the events by liking their Facebook page and following them on Twitter.
