An exhibition of work by fashion illustrator David Downton went on show at Lumas Gallery on Friday.

In an industry so reliant upon photography, Downton's illustrations distil the essence of a design and render the model's pose in just a few brushstrokes or charcoal lines, creating refreshing, striking and glamorous images that have graced the cover of Vogue. Some of his work for commercial outlets are drawn from a mere description by the designer which he interprets. It is not unknown for a customer who subsequently buys from a store to complain that something they saw and bought on the strength of his illustration has a button missing on the finished article.

As is clear from the exhibition, Downton loves drawing Erin O'Connor. They've been working together since 1999 and Erin was present at the opening. If you've ever watched Tyra bang on in Top Model you'll appreciate what a pro she is, "finding the light" for even this shot.

Lumas Gallery is at 50 Conduit Street W1S 2YT and is open daily. The exhibition runs until 5 April.
