Opera Preview: Glyndebourne @ Somerset House

An opportunity to sample the classical delights of Glyndebourne without having to dig out tiara and tails presents itself at Somerset House this month.

Three full length operas are to be screened over the weekend of 20-22 August. Billy Budd, The Rake's Progress and Hansel and Gretel will be beamed onto the big screen in the beautiful courtyard (fountains switched off). What's more, the Rake's Progress will come live from the Sussex opera house, adding an extra frisson to the experience. When the final encore has faded you can be tres smug having "done" Glyndebourne without having to schlep back from Sussex in the middle of the night, inappropriately attired. Hop on a bus at Aldwych, 'evening dress' be damned.

Pack a picnic and some comfy cushions to prevent numb bum.

More information at the Glyndebourne website. Tickets £15. Buy online.
