Preview: East London Printmakers Summer Fete & Annual Exhibition

ELPfete.jpg East London Printmakers do pretty much what it says on the tin with the exception that they are in fact, much more than that. It's true that they comprise of 60 or so artist-printmakers, based in an amazing spacious studio on Mare Street in Hackney, but they also run a plethora of workshops and courses for those who wish to learn about screen printing, linocut, T-shirt and fabric printing, Japanese woodblock and dry point to name but a few.

They have an ‘open access’ policy, so provide a space and equipment for those that either already have the experience to work independently in the studio through one of the introductory courses, giving access to the top notch facilities for people's own creative urges.

On top of all this they also organise exhibitions and events, and this coming week sees a print-tastic double whammy with their annual exhibition, showcasing the work of ELP members, and on Saturday their summer fete, which promises an afternoon of food, art, games, music and printing activities.

Just to whet you appetite, the fete, which asks for £1 entry fee, or 50p if you happen to be under 16, will feature a giant linocut printing session with a steam roller, the opportunity to print your own bag, a masked tennis table tournament, an abundance of tea and cakes and of course the opportunity to peruse and buy (if you so wish) any number of prints, cards, artists books and other print based curiosities from ELP members.

ELP have mustered an array of guest stalls that include badge making, the opportunity to make your very own ceramic lamp, screen printed tea towels, books, cards and coasters, undergarments and nipple tassles (for those that feel that their nipples are lacking something) and a ‘Lucky Skip’ which is like lucky dip … but in a skip.

If you haven't had your fill by 6pm, the afternoon events will be swiftly followed by bands, beer and a barbeque.
