Petanque is French bowls, where the steel ball - boule - is artfully tossed underarm towards a wooden jack generally played in a village square under a shady tree with a Pernod, beret and a Gitane (add your 'Allo 'Allo stereotypes here). This most Gallic of games gets competitive between 11am-7pm with an open free tournament, courtesy of Ricard, who will also equip you with a complimentary drink and panama hat to get you in the mood. French jazz will seduce your ears and the splendour of Chelsea Physic Garden will be available at no cost (normal admission £8).
Teams of three people can register for free any time from 11.00 am on the day or in order to guarantee entry teams can pre-register by emailing [email protected].
