Fed up with reading the same old news lite on your travels around London? Then why not get your nose into a good book? And if you're strapped for cash and can't afford to buy your own, never fear: the people behind Choose What You Read are here to save you.

They loan books out and only ask that people return them when they're done, so they can be read again by someone else. And they actively encourage readers to add their name to the front of each book to build up a community of bibliophiles. It's a bit like Bookcrossing for commuters.

The Choose What You Read librarians will next be at their spots at Liverpool Street, Waterloo, Westminster, Euston and Paddington stations on 5 May. They even have a returns drop box in the Curzon Soho and are working on getting more locations. We think it's all a much better idea than contributing to the mountain of litter created by the freesheets, and far more edifying than reading about which nightclub Peaches Geldof stood in front of the night before.
