Manor Garden Allotments: Gone But Not Forgotten

You might remember the plight of the wonderful Manor Garden Allotments from last year. The green fingered East Enders were eventually evicted and transplanted to a plot of land in Marsh Lane, Leyton after a spirited but unsuccessul fight. Now, however, the ghost of Manor Gardens has been transmuted into art with a reconstruction of the original "community shed" at its heart.

Student artist, Thomas Pausz, has constructed the shed as part of his course using the memories and stoires of the former plotholders. The shed goes on display at the Royal College of Art tonight for a special evening involving the screening of a film about the allotments, sadly called "This Was Forever" by Marc Aitken, and a meeting of the former allotmenteers who are invited to revisit and use the community shed.

It doesn't sound like the transition to the new location has been easy so expect an evening full of community feeling, nostalgia, some bitterness and sadness.

The shed will be on display at the Royal College of Art until 7 February. Image courtesy of Manor Gardens Allotment Society website.
