This pub was voted among the top 10 pubs in central London by Londonist readers, as well as one of the best pubs in Chelsea.
Even though the Anglesea isn't all that central, it still got voted as one of London's best central pubs. That immediately tells you something of the quality of this place. It's far enough away from the tube and museums that few tourists ever find it. That's not to say it's a sleepy backwater. The Anglesea quickly filled up on our recent Saturday lunch visit and, during the week, it draws in clinical researchers and other staff from the nearby Royal Marsden and Institute of Cancer Research.
Ale fans will immediately rejoice at the sight of six hand pumps that mix up old favourites and lesser-seen guest ales. Wine lovers, meanwhile, can pick from a vast, French-centric list. The food menu is also top-notch where, again, choice and quality are both championed. They even managed to draw some taste out of squid, that blandest of seafoods.
The main bar is a relaxing, wooden space where the eye is repeatedly drawn to the massive naked lady, whose painting guards the entrance to the loos. A smaller restaurant space can be found on the lower split-level, and there's a sheltered outdoor space to the front.
