White Cross

White Cross

A charming riverside pub, owned by Young's. Its prominent location means that it can get very busy, but the large outdoor area offers overspill. Actually, overspill is something this pub takes in its stride. Catch it at high tide and the beer garden gets partially flooded.

A higher-level entrance offers egress for those in fear of their shoes, and a row of wellies offers further counter-hydrous assistance.

The pub dates back to 1748, and is built on the site of a Franciscan friary whose remains are apparently in the cellars. The name is a reference to those holy origins.

Outdoor bar

The interior is cosy, with a real fire roaring in the winter. We've not tried the food, but we're told the Sunday roasts are particularly recommended.
