Holly Bush, Hampstead

Holly Bush, Hampstead

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

Charles Darwin would have approved of this pub. Not just because of its botanical name, but also because it naturally selects only pint-seekers who are capable of scaling a not-insignificant hill.

It's worth the climb, however, for one of the most charismatic pubs in the capital. A series of oaken rooms with etched glass panels and tactile wallpaper offer a timeless appeal, as does the village-like approach road.

Needless to say, the place is usually busy with the Hampstead locals and any tourists who've done their homework. We even saw Liam Gallagher in here once. Take your time to explore the many rooms, and the little-known overflow on the first floor. Beers and food live up to the usual Fuller's spec: solid if unadventurous.

We particularly like the way the landlord has appended little memorial plaques to regulars who've sank their last pint. What a beautiful way to be remembered.
