Cutty Sark

Cutty Sark

This pub has been voted by our readers as one of the best along the River Thames. See the full list of winners here.

Over 200 years old, and full of (tasteful) nauticalia, the Cutty Sark is just one pirate short of a Benbow. There are at least a dozen pubs closer to the Cutty Sark (the famous tea clipper) than The Cutty Sark, but that distance is to this pub's benefit. Far from the madding crowds of touristland Greenwich, this amiable riverside bar attracts a well-to-do local crowd.

The ground floor contains nooks and corners for convivial drinking, while the upstairs is mostly given to dining. While this area looks a bit posh, they were more than happy to accommodate a bunch of sodden canoeists in waterproofs, not to mention our troupe of inebriated pub crawlers on our tenth stop.

Beers come from Young's, Camden Town and nearby Meantime, while the wine list contains an impressive 11 each of white and red. Food is taken seriously here, and we'd recommend grabbing the fish of the day and booking the big bay window overlooking the Thames. In finer weather, there's a splendid little drinking area up against the river wall.
