If you walk up the hill from Crystal Palace station you’ll probably feel that you deserve a pint as you reach the top. You once had a choice of two at the main junction, but sadly the CAMRA-beloved Grape and Grain closed some time ago.
Westow House is no disappointment, however. It's lost a wee bit of character in recent years after a change of decor stripped out all the bookshelves and repainted the strong blue walls into those harmless shades of green-blue that half London's pubs now carry. But it's still a fine old place, with heaps of room to spread out. The place is at its best on a Sunday, when it can get a little crowded with roast-dinner-seekers.
The beer choice is also perhaps a little diminished from days of yore, when the Antic chain ruled the roost (it's now in the Portobello group). But you'll still find some very good ales on cask or keg. Family friendly, and with a regular quiz night and comedy shows, and open for breakfast from 7am/8am, it's also a popular community hub. You can even spend the night here by hiring a room upstairs.
