The Ship

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

364 days a year, this is a gentle, roomy pub with excellent riverside views and a pleasant beer garden. One day a year, in April, it becomes a rippling, heaving mass of beery humanity, as the crowds press in to watch the Cambridge v Oxford boat race. The toffy oarsmen and women complete the race just a few metres upriver of the pub, and this is among the busiest spectator areas.

Otherwise, you're in for a pretty relaxed, sport-and-food sort of place — a standard Taylor Walker property, with the benefit of Georgian architecture and long Thames views from the terrace. At least four screens, including one hidden at the back of the garden, pump out live football. There's a reasonable choice of beers on draught, but nothing to get too excited about. The future of this pub could be interesting. It sits right next door to the mammoth Stag Brewery, the London home of Budweiser, which is due to close at the end of the year. What happens next is anyone's guess.
