St Giles High Street doesn't look much like a High Street. The ancient road has long been subsumed into the neighbouring johnny-come-lately areas of Covent Garden, Soho and New Oxford Street. It still retains a good old village pub, however, in the shape of The Angel.
This is a typical Sam Smith's affair, with antique-looking partitions, decorative ceilings and several small rooms. More surprising are the cosy neo-Georgian rooms up a long flight of stairs. A small beer yard out the back is also available (closes before dark because of neighbouring properties), but this place is better as a warm, relaxing retreat in the winter.
