Formerly 'The Railway', this Fuller's pub now goes by a less prosaic name that still references the fact that it's part of the tube station. Indeed, it claims to be the only pub on a station platform on the entire tube network — which might well be true, but we can also consider The Phoenix in Denmark Hill Overground station.
We seem to remember, in the good old days, that you could wander straight onto the platform from the pub's back door. In these times of Oyster barriers and increased health and safety, however, you have to meander round to the front of the building and try to work out which of the several possible options is the real door in.
Once inside, you're greeted by a lofty space, the station's old 'timber steaming room', we're told. The bar itself is neatly decorated, with an antique rail clock supported on aluminium pillars, all set off by shiny white glazed tiles.
This is a Fuller's pub, and the ale range is drawn almost exclusively from that range. The bottle selection is better than your average, as is the wine list, and they also do cocktails.
Dining options are good, if nothing exceptional. Our mozzarella salad was scrumptious but lacking in quantity. Still, you'll want to dine here for the benefit of the conservatory restaurant space, with its unique views of the passing trains.
