As the closest pub to Buckingham Palace, The Phoenix should be styling itself as the Queen's local. On recent visits, we didn't quite get royalty, but we did rub shoulders with a noted Labour MP, a former Cabinet member and (the next time) over-dressed drinkers waiting for a Buck Pal garden party.
Nestling up against the St James Theatre, this place can get very busy before showtime, and it was standing-room only on a wet January Wednesday. A revisit on a Tuesday afternoon found things much quieter.
The Phoenix is an attractive pub, though sadly missing the kitsch totem pole and bar made from filing cabinets that once enquirked the place. Generously sized wooden tables make this a good option for large groups, though you might want to book.
Previously part of the Geronimo Inns chain, it's now under the auspices of Young's, which brings with it the usual set of ales. There's a reliable if pricey menu, averaging around the £20 mark for mains. A separate dining room upstairs offers more relaxed eating arrangements. There's also a small beer garden out the back and a roof terrace for warmer days.
