Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.
Pubs that try to do everything generally set themselves up for a fall. Then there's the Four Thieves — a combined brewery/foodie haunt/music hall/games mecca. The walls are dripping with everything from anatomical posters to stuffed elks. There's a gin garden, and a dance floor. There is no way on God's sweet Earth that all this stuff should work together, but it does — and how.
The beer, brewed onsite, is the work of Laine Brewing, therefore extremely decent. The Session IPA was on both cask and keg when we visited, there was a daring passion fruit brew on the bar, and one of the brewers told us they were experimenting with a blueberry saison. Best of all, the black IPA slipped down a treat.
Four Thieves also has a comprehensive selection of gins, which they'll mix for you with a proper tonic water, and garnishes that look beyond the usual slice of lemon/wedge of lime. You can also line your stomach with a very decent Four Thieves Burger, onglet steak and chips, or a pint (!) of sausage rolls.
But the food and drink is only the beginning. Four Thieves has all the fun of the fair — a veritable fun palace, hosting comedy, one of the best pub quizzes around, live music, interactive games, swing dance nights, and — best of all — an upstairs racing track. And we thought this place was good when it was Battersea Mess & Music Hall.
