Near the western shore of the island there is, what appears to be, an oversized model village version of Pisa Cathedral. This polychromatic brick marvel is 'The Space', neatly converted from an 1840’s Presbyterian mission to multi-use local arts venue.
To the side and up the stairs in the former vestry and classrooms there is Hubbub, an excellent Café/bar that also functions as a pub. The look is 'eclectic indie bar' taking care not to fight with the original features. Check out the lovely original but currently non-functioning gas lights and don’t miss the tiny soldiers glued to the ceiling.
The crowd is well mixed, with locals, students and trendy tourists. Beers on tap include San Miguel, Stella Artois plus Guinness Extra Cold and Thatchers Gold Cider. In bottles, a broad and ever changing range of beers, porters, ales and ciders, and there's a good range of wines. The food is fab, from the classic all day breakfast to falafels, steaks, proper burgers and a rather good chocolate brownie. A Tastecard may be used with pre-bookings and takeaway service is available. Hubbub is the perfect stopping place for a round the island trek or weekend brunch. What’s not to like…
