Pratts & Payne

Pratts & Payne

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion by the Londonist team.

Odd name, odd interior, excellent pub. We could leave the write-up there, but Pratts & Payne needs a bit more explanation. This cavernous bar takes its name from two Streatham legends: the now-vanished Pratts department store and local sex-party hostess Cynthia Payne.

It's cut from the same cloth as those other south London mega-pubs Tooting Tram and Balham Bowls Club. Indeed, all three are operated by the growing Antic pub group. The P&P follows the usual (and laudable) Antic antics of serving up top food, with unusual ales (ever seen Working Class Hero on a pump?) and a fine selection of wines. They also sell Monster Munch crisps, if you're after a vinegar-choking snack.

The decor is eccentric, including such novelties as poorly mounted promotions for marrowfat peas and a dusty trophy cabinet. A large dining area lurks round the back, followed by a sizeable beer garden.

Quiz night is Wednesday.
