Who Run The World? 8 Female Artists You Should Be Listening To Right Now

Big Joanie

Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has just launched Sounds Like London, a month-long music celebration championing the best of female talent in the music industry. At venues across the city, both emerging and established artists will take to the stage and show London what they're all about. Here's our pick of eight impressive female acts that you should check out as part of Sounds Like London's gig line-up:

1. Anoushka Lucas

With a mix of jazz and soul, Anoushka Lucas' music comes highly recommended by musician Jamie Cullum as well as Radio 2's BBC Music Introducing platform. Lucas is also a talented composer, having written scores for film and theatre in addition to making a name for herself on the festival scene.  If you're after a spot of feel-good jazz, book now to see Anoushka Lucas live on 7 June at The King's Head.

2. Waxahatchee

Named after Waxahatchee Creek in Alabama, this American indie project is fronted by singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield. Her latest album, Out in the Storm, is the 'blazing result of a woman reawakened' —if that doesn't sound like some serious girl-power material, we don't know what does. Catch Katie as Waxahatchee at Oval Space on 11 June.

3. Big Joanie

Big Joanie's music is just that — big. With a riot girl mentality, this feminist punk all-girl group have also set up their own record label, Sistah Punk Records, just in case they needed anything else to prove their awesomeness. Take a listen to their epic single, Crooked Room, which is all about the struggles of being a black woman. Witness their punky tunes at Electrowerkz on 21 June.

4. Laura Misch

Laura Misch's style is 'next generation jazz', incorporating electronic sounds to bring the genre into 2018. Misch mixes stunning saxophone playing with her soft yet powerful Laura Marling-esque voice. Playing alongside stunning visual projections, Misch and her band will be hitting up Jacks Solomon's Club in Soho on 28 June.

5. Tiana Major9

East London girl Tiana Major9 is your new go to artist for soulful tunes that you feel like you already know. She'll be performing alongside other emerging talent as part of BBC Introducing on 7 June at The Lexington, Pentonville Road. This girl should be on your radar this year.

6. Grime Violinist

The awesomely named Grime Violinist (aka Tanya Cracknell) will be performing at Girls of Grime: The Female Takeover at Birthdays on 17 June. If you didn't think it was possible to cover classic grime tunes on the violin, you'll be in for a treat — Cracknell has graced stages from the Royal Albert Hall to Glastonbury with her unique take on the genre. Hear her among other new female talent on the grime scene at this all-girl special.

7. Jessica Lynn

Country music artist Jessica Lynn will be performing at Oxford Street's legendary 100 Club on 11 June, a venue that has seen the likes of Mark Ronson and The Clash over the years. Lynn is being hailed as Shania Twain's successor, and is at home in Nashville as she is on the stage — whether you're a hardcore country fan or new on the scene, you're bound to love Lynn, with her insanely singable anthems.

8. Emily Rawson

DJ Emily Rawson may be a name familiar to you already — she's often behind the decks at BBC Radio 1Xtra. Running a popular throwback RnB and hip-hop club night, Supa Dupa Fly, Emily also has an all female brand, Rock the Belles, that's all about celebrating female DJ talent. Catch her for free on 7 June in Carnaby Street.
