A new railcard launches next week, giving 16 and 17 year olds a whopping 50% off rail fares.

The 16-17 Saver is available to anyone that age, and is valid for one year, or until your 18th birthday, whichever comes first. It costs £30, and goes on sale on Tuesday 20 August. Once you've purchased one, it's valid for use for travel from 2 September, and can be used on standard class tickets.

It differs to the existing 16-25 Railcard, which offers people in that age group 1/3 off fares. The 16-17 Saver is aimed at young people travelling for employment, work placements or internships, so it can be used on anytime, off-peak, advance and season tickets.

By contrast, the 16-25 Railcard is mainly aimed at leisure travellers, cannot be used for season tickets, and has a minimum fare at certain times of day.

The 16-17 Saver is valid on services by all train operating companies in England and Wales, but is not valid on ScotRail or Caledonian Sleeper services (Scotland offers its own Young Scot Card). It can be used for travelcards bought at stations outside London which include travel across London, but it isn't valid on travelcards or single journeys solely in London — the alternative for these journeys is the 16+ Zip Oyster card.

Find out more and buy a railcard on the 16-17 Saver website.
