A spectacular sound and light show takes over St Martin-in-the-Fields this January and February — projecting otherworldly shapes and images onto the interior of the central London church.

Space, The Universe and Everything is the work of Luxmuralis, a projection art company specialising in bringing large-scale illuminated artworks to churches and other majestic buildings.

This particular show explores our relationship with planet Earth and beyond, using original footage of a rocket launch, and exploring the Big Bang, before climaxing with an awe-inspiring image of Earth as seen from space. From the looks of the footage, it seems at times the church will appears to be bathed in the Aurora Borealis, and at others, turned into what looks like an ecclesiastical lava lamp. Pretty sublime stuff, which follows in the footsteps of the 'project onto a massive building' trend, which recently saw the history of the universe beamed onto the Tower of London.

Space, The Universe and Everything has already been to Liverpool Cathedral, and visits Hull Minster in January before arriving in London on 31 January. Variations of it have also been done at Bristol, Worcester, Sheffield and Exeter Cathedrals in recent years. Here's an idea of what to expect:

Visitors to the show follow a walking route through the building, which takes about an hour.

Space, The Universe and Everything is at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square, 31 January-4 February 2023. Tickets are £10 (under-16s £5) and must be booked in advance.
