In one to file under 'things we're surprised to hear hadn't happened already', Harrods has announced the closure of its main Knightsbridge store.
From 7pm Friday 20 March, Harrods' closes its doors until further notice. Well most its doors — Harrods is going back to its roots. The shop began as a grocer, and aims to continue as a grocer, keeping its Food Hall open.
Also remaining open is its pharmacy, and the shop promises to keep both of these sides of the business open unless forced to do otherwise.
In a statement, Harrods said it has gone through many challenges during its 170-year history:
We continued to trade and serve our customers during World War II, and only closed for a short period of time after the car bomb attack of the 1980s. Harrods is a symbol of resilience in a changing and often uncertain world, and I know that our values will ensure that we as a business come through this next chapter.
