510 More Skyscrapers Are Planned For London

London's bulking up. The fly-through video above shows what the city might look like in the near future, if planned buildings all go ahead. Areas of rapid growth include Nine Elms and Battersea, the South Bank, the Square Mile cluster, Canary Wharf, Greenwich Peninsula and the Royal Docks.

The film ties in with New London Architecture's annual report into the capital's tall buildings. The headline figure: 510 tall buildings (at least 20 storeys) were at some stage of planning or development, a rise of 12% on 2016. Two-thirds are in inner London. 110 are under construction, a jump of 26% on the previous year.

There are signs of a slow-down, too. New applications and project starts fell by 10% and 25%, respectively, on the previous year. The majority (471/510) of these towers are some form of residential. The rest are commercial (30) or hotels (9).

The report is free to download, and makes for a surprisingly breezy read. It is the only document on planning policy we've ever read that includes a quote from Yazz and the Plastic Population.
