Looks like a new museum is about to come blazing into London.
One of the capital's most popular pop-up museums could soon be getting a permanent home, if plans submitted to Lambeth Council are approved. Since it left Winchester House back in 2015, London Fire Brigade Museum has been on the move, and currently operates out of The Workshop — a former fire station garage that also hosts the excellent Migration Museum.
The new museum would live in Lambeth Fire Station; a striking — if a little severe-looking — Grade II listed building that served as London Fire Brigade's headquarters from 1937 until 2006.
It's all part of wider redevelopment plans at 8 Albert Embankment, which include a new, modern fire station and a ten storey hotel, as well as office and residential space. A previous attempt to redevelop the area by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands (LDS) for developer Native Land was nixed by the council back in 2011 amid concerns over the size of the proposed development and its impact on the local community.
Should these new plans come to fruition, Lambeth will welcome a state-of-the-art new museum, larger and more accessible than before. That means more artefacts, archives, and historic vehicles, as well as a dedicated learning centre which promises to reach thousands of school children every year.
