*Nee-naw nee-naw*. Watch out! London's finally getting a permanent Fire Brigade Museum.
8 Albert Embankment, overlooking the Thames, is set to be redeveloped. The Grade-II listed building in Lambeth, which used to be the London Fire Brigade's HQ, will become a myriad of things. First and foremost, it will be a modern fire station for Lambeth. Secondly it will house a permanent London Fire Brigade Museum. The photo above shows what the inside of the new museum will look like.
But that's not all that's due for the site. The proposals also contain plans for 443 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable. Finally, there's also going to be a rooftop restaurant and a hotel there too. These proposals have been given the green light by Lambeth Council, meaning work can progress on the scheme.
The scheme is a joint collaboration between U+I, London Fire Brigade and architects Pilbrow & Partners. It's aiming for completion in 2023.
Karen McCormick from U+I, said:
This is a big step towards the transformation of 8 Albert Embankment [...] a public site that has mostly lain vacant for ten years.
The museum will be an important educational centre and will provide a world class collection which tells the story of firefighting, from the Great Fire of London to the present day.
