A time to celebrate as much as to reflect, London History Day on Sunday 31 May is going to be a bit different this year. Dated to mark the anniversary of when Big Ben first started keeping time in 1859, the goal of this annual celebration is simple: bringing Londoners together to discover and delight in the city’s illustrious past.
Of course doing so in person isn’t on the cards right now. But the unique set of challenges we face today have cast a thought-provoking new light on this year’s events. Rather than stomping the streets of London, instead we’re invited to connect online for a virtual get-together where activities and stories inspired by Londoners' strength, resilience and community spirit take centre stage.
Resilience is a powerful theme found throughout London history, as you can see in the film above. Yet sometimes even the smallest stories can show the greatest spirit, which is why London History Day wants to hear from you.
Tell them about the people and places that remind you of London’s resilience using the hashtag #LondonHistoryDay. Your story doesn’t need to be from yonks ago, it could have happened just yesterday. What matters is that it sticks in your heart as a display of London’s courage and community spirit.
And you’ll be in fine company. Some of the capital’s best-loved museums and galleries are also delving deep into their archives to share items and stories of Londoners’ incredible strength from years gone by.
Once inspired, you’ll find plenty of arts and community initiatives to enjoy from your living room, both for children and adults alike. Whether you're diving into London’s past through online maps, dressing up as your London hero, crafting your very own London landmark or simply sitting back to browse the stories being shared online, London History Day is an opportunity for us all to celebrate, create and connect over a shared love of London — both past and present — during a time that will surely go down in history.
