Even Better Than The Real Thing? Vegan Fish And Chips Comes To Stoke Newington Sutton & Sons 3

London's vegan scene shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon, with another vegan menu popping up in one of the city's culinary instutions. A fish and chip shop. Specifically Sutton & Sons in Stoke Newington.

Whereas some places see vegan or veggie options as an afterthought to slide onto the bottom of the menu, Sutton & Sons have put real effort in, producing a whole alternative menu. On offer are the classics such as fish and chips, battered sausage, pie and mash and scampi, which we start with. It's fantastic, just like the real thing, with the perfect amount of chewiness.

The vegan scampi

Next it's onto the battered sausage, which does exactly what a battered sausage should do. In terms of taste, veggie sausages have come on leaps and bounds in the past few years, and with a bit of added batter they hit the spot. Finally the centrepiece, the fish and chips. The alternative fish is made from banana blossom as opposed to other London restaurants that offer 'tofish' and chips. The banana blossom has more of a fishy consistency, but ultimately less flavour compared to 'tofish' — it's rather bland.

The chips are chunky, like traditional English chips should be, and everything is helped down by some mushy peas and curry sauce. One downer on our visit was how long it all took. The place was busy, serving both those dining in and taking away, but fish and chips is supposed to be fast food. That it was not, nor was it served at usual restaurant pace either.
