London's constantly coming up with new takes on afternoon tea, but here's one that caught our eye: afternoon tea served in a working prison.
The Clink Restaurant located within HMP Brixton is offering the afternoon tea menu one day a fortnight from July 2024. As with all meals in the restaurant, the food is prepared and served by students of The Clink Charity, which trains people in prison, giving them a chance to pick up skills and earn qualifications to help them secure employment on release, and reduce reoffending rates.
All of the sandwiches, scones and pastries on The Clink's afternoon tea menu are prepared in the on-site Clink Bakery, helping students to earn their NVQ Level 2 in Patisserie and Confectionery. Finger sandwiches, plain and fruit scones, and cakes such as a raspberry and ruby chocolate eclair, and a citrus meringue tart all feature.
As you'd expect for a prison, security is strict. You'll need photo ID to enter, and certain items such as phones and cameras must be left in lockers at the entrance.
Afternoon tea at The Clink is available alternate Fridays from Friday 5 July 2024, priced at £37.50 per person. Advance booking required.
