A brass band playing your favourite Christmas carols. Fairy lights shimmering in a darkening sky. Sipping mulled wine by a roaring fire. It's the simplest traditions that really ignite your festive spirit — and you can find them all at Kingston Christmas Market.

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, this picturesque market town has conjured up quite the winter wonderland. Amongst the bauble-adorned log cabins that occupy Kingston's aptly-named Ancient Market Place you'll find a charming array of festive delights. There are stalls of unique stocking fillers to peruse and seasonal street food to tuck into, a vintage carousel for the kids, and a fire pit to keep you nice and toasty.

And the best bit? This soothingly old-fashioned yuletide celebration is a mere 25-minute journey from central London.

With all sorts of unique treats on offer — think traditionally-made moonshine, locally-crafted scented candles, artisanal cheese and chocolate — Kingston Christmas Market is perfect for gift shopping. Just off Ancient Market Place, outside the Grade-I listed All Saints Church, you'll find Eden Craft Marquee, and a treasure trove of Christmas decorations, quirky homeware and jewellery for you to peruse.

Still got a few things on your shopping list? Away from the market, you've got a fantastic selection of shops at your disposal — from high street favourites, to luxury brands, to quirky boutiques.

All that shopping is sure to make you peckish. You're spoilt for choice when it's time to grab a bite, with street food from around the world, as well as traditional Christmas market fare like Bratwurst and roast pork rolls. For pudding, there's churros, waffles, and mini dutch pancakes to devour.

Feeling thirsty? Get yourself a warming (and possibly boozy) drink from the bar. While you're there, don't forget to pick up some marshmallows to toast at the firepit, which is lit at 4pm, Thursday-Sunday. Throw live entertainment into the mix — including a traditional brass band performing every Thursday — and you've got Christmas cheer, guaranteed.

So don your cosiest jumper, grab your Oyster card, and get ready for a properly festive day out.

Kingston Christmas Market, every day at Ancient Market Place until 24 December. The bar and food stalls reopen on 26 December-31 December 2019. Open 10am-6pm, Sunday-Wednesday and 10am-8pm, Thursday-Saturday.
