Is The World's Best New Engineering Project Here In London?

This is a sponsored article on behalf of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

A global competition to crown the world's best recent civil engineering project has kicked off — and you get to decide who wins. The London HQ of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) is hoping that a shortlisted entry from our own fair city will earn your vote in the ICE Global People's Choice Award. Folks, it's time to get behind Deepham Sewage Treatment Works.

It might not sound glamorous, but this north London sewage treatment facility is vital to the capital and its future. Deepham Sewage Treatment Works — the fourth largest in the UK — treats wastewater from over one million people in the Thames Water area, and the recent upgrade work here had to be undertaken without disrupting its day-to-day operations.

To the undoubted delight Edmonton locals, the major upgrade project achieved a remarkable 99% elimination of odours and has improved the water quality of the nearby River Lea. This in turn benefits the aquatic life that call the river home.

The plant is also more sustainable than ever before. Harnessed energy from the sewage treatment now generates two-thirds of the power needed to run the site — particularly welcome news in an era when the importance of renewable energy has never been more apparent.

Have we convinced you yet? With projects like Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge and the Shed Cultural Centre in New York City also in the running, competition is fierce, but the environmental improvements brought about at Deepham Sewage Treatment Works alone make it a worthy contender. Click here to vote — you've got until Sunday 27 September to do so.

Jonathan Baggs, the London Director at ICE says:

In this global poll we are aiming for number one and will not settle for number two. We ask that Londoners lend their support to this vital sewage upgrade work which safeguards the quality of life for one million Londoners while improving the local environment and boosting sustainability.

The winner of ICE Global People's Choice Award will be revealed on 12 November. Use #ICEPeopleschoice on social to stay updated.
