A Tube Driver's Photos Of The East End In Colour From The 1980s

Old undiscovered photographs and a transport connection. We think we've found the most 'Londonist' story out there...

Central line driver Tim Brown spent his days off out and about with his camera. This was back in the eighties, and Brown's photos never found much of an audience back then.

Brown focused his camera mainly on transport hubs, including the brand new Dockland Light Railway. This — like the cranes that also litter his pictures — was a synecdoche of the changes the area was enduring in the eighties. However there are still plenty of signs of the old East End surviving in these deadpan images.

The photos were discovered by Chris Dorley-Brown, after Tim Brown uploaded them to Flickr about 10 years ago. Dorley-Brown has just curated a book of photos by David Granick, showing the East End between 1960-1980, and this is a natural successor.

Therefore the photos have been collected into a book and are being published by Hoxton Mini Press. The book is published on 16 May 2019. Take a look at a few of our favourites:
