We could all do with a bit of cheering up every now and then — so we've cracked out the animal photos. All of these London-based animal centres operate as charities, so as well as being grateful for donations they're often on the lookout for volunteers.

Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Perhaps the best known of all of London's animal shelters, partly due to its long history, and most recently thanks to a certain Mr O'Grady, Battersea Dogs & Cats Home started as The Temporary Home for Lost & Starving Dogs in 1860. Cats got involved 23 years later.

Mayhew Animal Home

The Mayhew is a  shelter and rehoming centre in Kensal Green which cares for abandoned and neglected dogs and cats. We'd carry on but we're guessing you're distracted by these kittens unwrapping presents.

All Dogs Matter

Highgate-based All Dogs Matter specialises, unsurprisingly, in dogs — trying to rehome canine strays, dogs from pounds or simply those whose owners no longer can or want to keep them. Where possible, the dogs stay with foster carers rather than in kennels until a permanent home is found for them.

RSPCA Friern Barnet

The Friern Barnet branch of the RSPCA, in Arnos Grove is a cats-only branch (sorry Fido), located inside a Pets At Home store, and offering moggy care advice to the public.

Cats Protection North London

The Archway branch of Cats Protection houses more than 800 cats and kittens every year, which is no mean feat. The Instagram feed also shows goings on at the Mitcham Homing Centre.

Cat Cuddles

Greenwich-based Cat Cuddles takes in cats whose owners are no longer able to keep them, and pairs them up with suitable, feline-friendly families.
