Back in January the RSPB asked Londoners to spend an hour in their gardens, counting the birds that they saw. Now, the results of the Big Garden Birdwatch are in. The three most commonly recorded species of bird in London, as reported by the public, are woodpigeons, house sparrows and starlings.
Nearly 30,000 Londoners took part in 2015, up 10.5% on last year, meaning that the results of the largest citizen science survey in the UK are more comprehensive than ever.
But it's not all good news.
Two of three most common species in London remain on the red list of Birds of Conservation Concern. The list is compiled by several nature charities, and both house sparrows and starlings made the top category, meaning that urgent action is needed to save them.
Other species that made the list of most commonly spotted birds in London include blue tits, feral pigeons, blackbirds, ring necked parakeets (which saw a significant rise in numbers this year), magpies, robins and great tits.
