Foodie Pop-Ups To Try This Month: March 2015

Club Mexicana vegan street food

From tongue and trotters to meat-free feasts, vegan street food and lashings of whisky — these are the foodie pop-ups, residencies and supperclubs to try in March.

We’ve picked only the most interesting events and ordered them so that those ending soonest are at the top. We’ve also prominently included the ticket price if there is one. If you give any of them a go, let us know what you think. And if we’re missing something that you reckon sounds great, then please tell us in the comments below.

Earl’s Hoxton Cheesesteak residency

When? 5-7 March
Where? The Proud Archivist, 2-10 Hertford Road, N1 5ET
Created by Joe Gray, a graduate of Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen restaurant, Earl’s is a new street food brand with one particularly impressive-sounding signature dish — the Hoxton cheesesteak. From Thursday 5 to Saturday 7 March, Gray will be popping up at canalside bar, restaurant and gallery space The Proud Archivist (just off Kingsland Road) and doling them out for lunch and dinner. It consists of thinly sliced bavette steak, confit onion and provolone cheese in a sub-style roll with homemade sauces and pickled chillies — what’s more, every order will come with free spicy chicken wings or mac n cini (that’s a mac n cheese arancini).

Best of the Butcher’s Block

When? 13 March, 7pm
Where? Holloway (location on booking)
How much? £29.50
With this dinner, supperclub hosts Smoke & Salt are on a mission to show off the cuts of meat (and fish) which aren’t usually given all that much attention — which sounds like an offally good idea to us. The three-course menu includes beef broth with tongue, heart and spring greens, a cod cheek and chorizo salad, and a pud made with rhubarb, wild honey and fennel. Snacks will also include bone marrow brioche served with marrow and parsley butter, as well as artichoke heart barigoule for the veggies.

Pig Headed? Or Hot To Trot?

When? 14 March, 7pm
Where? Fulham (location on booking)
How much? £27.50, including five courses with matched beers and wines
If going to an event run by an organisation which calls itself Mr Pigstuff isn’t reason enough to attend this one-off dinner, then puddings laden with pig meat might be. Savouries include tea-smoked brawn with roast brussels sprouts, pear and rhubarb; poached and brioche-crumbed pig’s tongue and ears with pickles; trotters stuffed with black and white puddings and served with smoked ham hock; and slow-roasted pork cheeks with orange, bay and rosemary. If that isn’t whole hog enough for you, then the trio of puds will seal the deal: chocolate and chorizo crème brûlée, lardy apple cake with bacon ice cream, and something called ‘bacon from heaven tartlet’ — whatever it is, we trust it’s porkalicious. There’ll also be matched beers and wines to pair with each course.

Club Mexicana’s Street Food Fridays

When? 6, 13 and 20 March, from 6.30pm
Where? The Hornbeam Café, 458 Hoe Street, E17 9AH
Club Mexicana deals in fiery-flavoured vegan Mexican street food, and is taking over Walthamstow’s Hornbeam Café for a series of Friday night soirees this month. There’ll be different menus each week, with nachos, tamales and BBQ pulled jackfruit burritos all set to feature — plus beers and all manner of tequila-based drinks. The café isn’t big so booking ahead is recommended.

Glenmorangie Unseen bar

When? 13-21 March, 5pm-midnight daily
Where? 15 Bateman Street, W1D 3AQ
Despite its name, whisky fans will want to take a look at this short-lived Soho pop-up from Glenmorangie. The bar will serve the whole range of Glenmorangie whiskies — from its original (£4 for 25ml) up to its 25 year old (£20 for 25ml) — along with a list of whisky cocktails (£8-£10) designed to push barriers while still showing off the whiskies’ different characteristics. There are also a number of whisky flights and specially designed pairings to try, which hook up the different whiskies with varying cheeses and chocolates to see how they work together. For those wanting more, there’s a section at the back of the pop-up called The Glenmorangie Vault where you can take part in tutored tastings and try some extra special vintages — you need to book for this, but you can just walk into to the bar area.

Annie The Owl

When? 19-25 March, 8.30pm-2am daily
Where? An undisclosed location in Soho
How much? £20
You’ve heard about this one already: for one week only, Soho is getting an owl bar. When it was first announced, the plan was to serve cocktails. Since then, booze has been withdrawn due to welfare concerns and it will offer smoothies instead — but there are still owls. There have been over a hundred applications for tickets in the online ballot, so if you do want to go you’ll need luck on your side.

Ben Spalding’s longer Laundry

When? Until 29 March
Where? The Laundry, 2-18 Warburton Road, E8 3FN
Last month we suggested you pay a visit to The Canteen at The Laundry in London Fields, where Ben Spalding — former chef at John Salt in Islington, regular supperclub host and foodie to watch — would be cooking for one month only. Well, it was so popular that the gig’s been extended and he’ll now stay there until the end of March — good news for those who didn’t get round to going. A couple of particularly interesting-sounding dishes on the menu include ‘fried & runny Burford Brown egg, toasted cashews, medjool dates, fennel, 14 month old kimchi and raw smoked honey’ and ‘whipped tuna with a little anchovy, baby gem lettuce, frozen beetroot and pomegranate molasses’.

Abigail’s Party

When? 11 March-4 April, 7.30pm
Where? The Rose Lipman Building, 43 De Beauvoir Road, N1 5SQ
How much? £55, including five courses and welcome cocktail
Acclaimed pop-up troop The Art Of Dining are behind this retro romp back to the 70s, inspired by the Mike Leigh play of the same name. In a room decked out like a 70s living room — complete with loud wallpaper, lava lamps, hostess trolleys and shag-pile rugs — guests will be served a five-course menu of twisted 70s classics cooked by Moro-trained chef Ellen Parr. The menu promises prawn cocktail with a Thai edge along with takes on mousse, fondue and twiglets. An immersive theatrical element promises ‘awkward moments’, while dressing up is not compulsory but encouraged.

Sutton & Sons at Boxpark

When? All month
Where? Unit 52, Boxpark, 2-10 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6GY
We recently added Sutton & Sons in Stoke Newington to our pick of London’s Best Fish & Chips, praising its fat, flaky fillets of moist cod encased in perfectly crunchy and chewy batter. Now the team have launched a long-term pop-up in Shoreditch’s Boxpark, bringing those fish and chips, other fish dishes and Mrs Sutton’s homemade pickles (including pickled quail eggs) and puddings (including an exemplary sticky toffee pud) to a wider audience. It’s set to run for approximately six months.

Ongoing pop-ups — which we've featured before — that are worth a visit this month...

Hawker House

When? Until 4 April, Fridays and Saturdays
Where? Hawker House, 260-264 Kingsland Road, E8 4DG
How much? £4 after 7pm (free before)
The now annual wintertime answer to summer’s al fresco Street Feast, indoor street food market Hawker House handily allows us to eat and drink until our heart’s content without being exposed to the elements. This time round it’s got a new home near the canal at Haggerston, and a mix of new and returning stalls including Bleecker Burger, Breddos, Busan BBQ, Kimchinary, Smokestak and Yum Bun. Som Saa

When? All month
Where? Climpson’s Arch, Arch 374, Helmsley Place, E8 3SB
We reviewed Andy Oliver’s Thai pop-up Som Saa when it launched back in November, and fell for its explosive, in-your-face and endearingly rustic flavours — it’s still around for the duration of March, but that will be about it.

Ceru

When? All month
Where? 29 Rathbone Place, W1T 1JG
Fitzrovia’s Ceru is a catch for vibrant, sunny meze — and it was a big hit with us when we reviewed it recently. It’s only around (in its current form, at least) until the end of April, so don’t miss out.
