Government Cancels Third Runway At Heathrow

2301_plane.jpg Well, that didn't take long then: Britain's new coalition government (let's call them the Torycrats) has moved swiftly to announce that the third runway project at Heathrow airport has been cancelled. Both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats made the promise to scrap the project in their election campaigns, so the decision isn't a particularly surprising one. The government has also said that it opposes any further runway construction at Stansted or Gatwick; plucky little Luton, which clings desperately on to its dubious "London" designation, is also unlikely to see further expansion. And last we heard, Boris Island was dead in the water. Instead, the new government wants to build improved rail links between Heathrow and the rest of the country; a decision that will impress greens but may not find favour with business leaders.
