Phillyist explored an impending implosion and lived to tell the tale.Gothamist marveled at the city's new NYC-branded condom campaign - especially the use of a Toronto landmark in the advertising. (Also, fun fact: Gothamist turned five years old yesterday.)Tired of the worldwide Scientology protests? Torontoist totally isn't: they covered the big downtown protest the day it happened, and followed up with an examination of all......

On rare occasions a live music show is so complete that it goes beyond mere listening to physically experiencing the music. Wolves in the Throne Room managed to achieve that in their set at the Camden Underworld on February 10th. Although it's hard to describe their sound, Wolves in the Throne Room play an atmospheric approximation of black metal that is simultaneously both minimal and majestic, arising from excruciatingly deep sorrow for the suffering of the Earth. (Well, it makes a change from the usual "HAIL SATAN" lyrics often found in the BM scene.)...

37. London UFOs Part Three The 40s were the start of something huge for ufology after pilot Kenneth Arnold observed nine disc-like craft over Washington in 1947. For London, it was the 22nd of November when a female witness, whilst under hypnosis, spoke of being abducted by two silver suited females and put before a man who burned the figures ‘H6AQ’ onto her leg, which were still visible when she awoke from her trance.......

After an extended holiday, Saturday Cinema Summary is back, courtesy of James Bryan... This week Ridley Scott makes a bid to join the hallowed greats of gangster films with American Gangster, the naked pixelated form of Angelina Jolie drips in gold in Beowulf and Brick Lane gets the film treatment. American Gangster seems to have all the ingredients of an instant classic, even the title smacks of definitive greatness. Throw in the setting of......

We warned you that Dolphins and Giants from America are soon to arrive on our shores. The players are no doubt taking utmost care in preparing for their arrival tomorrow morning. One player might have over-prepared but for completely the wrong country, so keep an eye out for the anxious guy with a puzzled-looking translator under one arm. If Channing Crowder, the Miami Dolphins linebacker approaches you this weekend, speak loudly, slowly and clearly......

Living thousands of miles away from the White House doesn't mean you can't have a say in who's going to be living there come 2009. According to a report in The Times, London-based Americans have raised 40% of a $1 million overseas war chest for the candidates in next year's presidential election. Thus far, Barack Obama sits top of the class, with £36,000 solicited from Britain since June. His Democratic rival Hillary Clinton has......

This weekend column is brought to you by the founders of Niceties Tokens, Liz and Pete of Team Nice. 17. Yeah whatever I did a little poll about why so many of us are apathetic towards politics. The subject of politics is so huge and disparate that it’s overwhelming, so for this I focused on the issue of tax. Now, once again the numbers were incredibly small (24) but have a read, as the......

As befits a truly global capital, London has established itself as a hub in the important international trade of tourist-attracting human reproductions, importing Chinese warriors and exporting waxwork celebrities. While the first crowds were taking a gander at 20 members of the Emperor Ying’s terracotta court at the British Museum, 51 waxworks produced by Madame Tussauds arrived in Washington DC, naked and apparently ready to party. The likes of Beyonce, George Clooney, Tom Cruise......

This week ended with the launch of the seventh and final Harry Potter installation. But while the world was consumed with Pottermania, it's important to remember that there were more serious things going on in the world, too – two of them in -Ist cities. Sampaist was shocked when a passenger jet crashed into the center of Sao Paulo, killing at least 200 people. The airplane, an Airbus A320, skidded off the runway at the......

LAist is experimenting with blogging dates from J-Date, but finds the best men are found offline. Some date vicariously online and that is one reason why porn is big -- really freaking big -- so they ask if they should cover XXX since the heart of it lays in the city's San Fernando Valley. This week we'd like to congratulate the -ist network's Mother Hen, Gothamist's Jen Chung, who found herself a recipient of Wired Magazine's Wired Rave Award. If that doesn't sound terribly exciting, keep in mind another recipient was J.K. Rowling. Yep, that's right, the -ist network and Harry Potter now have something in common. Go us. It seems like, all across the network, folks were up to no good. Maybe it was all the green beer from last weekend... Gothamist spent the week writing about New Yorkers behaving badly: at the post office, at the Garden, and at the fertility clinic. Calvin Klein may not be misbehaving, but he's just a little dirty, and in a completely different way than some NYC kitchens. SFist had its share of misbehave-rs, too, like......

Usually calls to aid the police in their inquiries are a bit grim, but we're kicking off with this one because it's the best part of the story: Anyone who sees three foot Power Rangers, boxed Star Wars memorabilia or anything suspicious call Detective Constable Rachel Porter on 020 8247 4945. More fatal gun crime: Officers were called to reports of a shooting in Scrubs Lane at 1615 GMT on Sunday afternoon. The victim, a 21-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene. In a separate incident a policer officer was shot in South London: The officer, from Southwark, was unhurt in the shooting in Beaton Close, Peckham, in the early hours of Sunday. No-one......

Between fake terrorist alerts and scandals big and small, this just might be the Best Best of the -ists ever. We're exhausted just thinking about it. Texas is thawing, the Northeast is freezing, and a sort of natural order seems almost restored to the Ist-A-Verse. Almost. Londonist HQ—that is to say, the city of London—was battered by heavy winds, making it a bad time to be a twelve-meter (nearly forty-foot) tall snowman. Still, not everyone decided to keep warmly covered. Meanwhile, back indoors, the Big Brother racism is now causing all kinds of headaches for international diplomats, and Londonist got into......

This week - Denzel Washington goes back in time (Déjà Vu) and a horrible Christmas slasher, (Black Christmas). We're going to be frank. There really isn't anything exciting that has come out this week. Even the reviews are pretty boring. A murder of crows. A shrewdness of apes. A tower of giraffes. A grosvenor of idiots. Residents living near the US embassy in London on Thursday accused British authorities of leaving them vulnerable to a terrorist attack by failing to provide adequate security measures. Surely it’s not possible to dislike the gherkin? It’s that rare Lineker of buildings –distinctive profile, super-famous yet loved by all. Or so we thought... Washington Post architecture critic Roger K Lewis isn’t the biggest fan. His latest column pours careful scorn on Foster’s masterpiece, calling it repetitive and intrusive. He also opines that the gherkin ‘disregards its site’, which comprises ‘a tightly knit medieval fabric of narrow streets and small blocks’. Erm, did......

That’s right. This week we decided to track down the Leader of the Free World.
