This Week In London’s History Monday – 11th August 1897: Enid Blyton is born in East Dulwich. She would become a hugely successful author of children’s fiction. Tuesday – 12th August 1827: Renowned poet and painter William Blake dies. Five days later, he would be buried in an unmarked grave in Bunhill Fields. Wheelie bin crisis? Blame the French. That's what Lewisham is doing, claiming that a fire in France is responsible for a severe worldwide shortage that has also blighted local homeowners. Councillors in the southeast London borough have hit upon an ingenious solution - they're asking people to suck up a little of that wartime spirit and share their bins with the neighbours. Never mind that most folk in London could barely pick their neighbours......

60. More Than Just A Haunting... In the borough of Lewisham sits Brockley Road. Not exactly known for its supernatural relations or unnerving apparitions, but let me share with you a campfire story to chill even the warmest of hearts... It happened during the 1800s and the experience was written up and posted to a magazine known as the Review Of Reviews edited by a Mr W.T. Stead who would unfortunately perish aboard the......

It's not often Londonist highlights a Lewisham Council plaque unveiling, but when it's of one commemorating such a great Londoner, we're glad to make an exception. The plaque in question was unveiled early this month on Camplin Street, New Cross, and marks the site where the historian Roy Porter (1954–2002) spent his childhood. Porter combined astonishing erudition with an all-encompassing approachability. His plaque is a fitting reminder of the normal and everyday background of......

In the fall, Hackney had a measles problem. Now, the spots have spread to Lewisham, with 19 cases in January -- a third of the 67 cases reported in south-east London. The Health Protection Agency are warning that we'll be seeing even more sick spotty kiddies in the coming months if more tots aren't vaccinated, so they're making a new push to inform parents. In Lewisham, MMR vaccine uptake is currently 64.3%, while the experts......

Residents vs. architects: Those who live in Robin Hood Gardens want the estate demolished, whilst architects fight to save “seminal” modernist buildings. Your daily crime round-up: “Osama bin London” jailed indefinitely; cleaner who killed 94-year-old widow jailed for life; financial trader denies involvement in murder of wealthy writer. We’re sensing a pattern here: Man scales Japanese embassy in London to protest Japanese whaling. Met to build firearms training centre near Heathrow; increased security concerns......

Lewisham is a bit harsh, innit? Wot wiv all the crime an’ all. Well. That’s true. But there is also another side to Lewisham; one in which Victorian buildings co-exist with shiny regenerated areas, and where farmers’ markets and leisure centres are available for all to use. Now Lewisham Council has decided to refurbish the oldest pool in London, Forest Hill Pools, which were built in the 1880s. The Pools were suddenly closed in......

This is what we have learned in between defrosting our typing fingers this weekend: The Met apparently wants more lady bikers. They claim macho stereotyping is putting the girls off: why don’t they realise that an endless run of bad hair days is just not that appealing. Ray ‘Sexy Beast’ Winstone is in the running for a remake of the Sweeney. Cor blimey guv. Residents of a block of flats in Lewisham have been......
