A short notice on Tower Hamlets council's website reveals that, "due to the large amount of public interest", the planning application for the Islamic-flavoured arches at either end of Brick Lane has been temporarily withdrawn. The council, which was recently the subject of a Dispatches programme about Islamist encroachment in British politics, says it wishes to "build upon the extensive community engagement and consultation" (for which read: strident criticism from locals). Their reflections could see the scheme amended, or if saner heads prevail, the idea could be scrapped and taxpayer money -- which is actually earmarked for Section 106 obligations -- be put to decent use for the entire community, not just those approved by a narrow-minded section of council apparatchiks. more ›
