Wednesday – 6th February 1875: The......

It may be 40 years since the Abortion Act legalised terminations but a BBC Radio 5 Live investigation suggests that modern day "back street abortions" are easily found in London. Thankfully, we're not talking struck off doctors and knitting needles but Chinese herbal remedies from shops in Dalston and illegally obtained abortion drugs: an undercover investigator was able to get their hands on 14 abortion pills for £30 from an entirely unqualified bloke in......

Walking, iPods and London trivia are the holy trinity as far as Londonist is concerned. The three have now reached a state of conjoined perfection in Soundmap. Sites offering guided walks via media players are two a penny. We reviewed a whole troupe of them last year. Some are well written but lack production, others are polished but empty. Soundmap gets everything right. The three walks currently on the site cover Soho, Camden and......

This Day In London’s History 1924: The Greenwich Time Signal pips are broadcast on BBC Radio for the first time. This one is quite pleasingly geeky. Shortly after the formation of the BBC in 1922, it was suggested that it might be a nice idea to broadcast a time signal “under direct control of the Greenwich Observatory”. No-one did much about the idea for a couple of years, until John Reith (general manager of......

Crushed at our cricketing walloping from the Wallabies? Numbed at our humbling on the international soccer stage? Tempted to down cratefuls of the sponsor's product to submerge the memory of the autumn rugby fiascos? Then why not treat yourself to a few hours of a sport where the UK is still the dominant force? The first big snooker tournament of the year, the SAGA Insurance Masters, breaks off at Wembley on Sunday with the......

Sixty seconds on BBC Radio Five Live yesterday lunchtime beautifully encapsulated what English football is currently going through. The first forty-five seconds consisted of pained hand-wringing about foreign ownership, fans becoming increasingly helpless in the face of billionaire consortia and the increasingly predictable pecking order at the top of the game. The melancholia was then abruptly curtailed by a rousing fanfare behind an excitable presenter’s voice declaiming: Good afternoon and welcome to Stamford Bridge......

Mr Timothy, 47, from Brecon, Mid Wales, initially received £2,480 worth of bills and told BBC Radio 4's You And Yours programme the cost had been set to increase if he did not pay up. Quick update on Lewis Pugh, who you may remember is the crazy lawyer attempting to swim the entire length of the Thames. Well, he’s been stymied right from the start - by a lack of water. Upon reaching the source of the Thames in Kemble, Gloucestershire, Pugh discovered that the drought is indeed real, and that the water level was too low to allow swimming. (Though isn’t that usually the case at the source......

Without a doubt my perfect Sunday would always begin with enough time to sit around in bed reading the papers. If we're talking 'fantasy land' stuff then of course the papers would be delivered to the door of my flat, but I don't want to get greedy here and really the trip up to Mike's newsagents on the South Lambeth Road is never a chore and it gives me the opportunity to discuss that......

Discarded packed lunches galore at City Hall next Monday as it plays host to a World Food Day conference and journalists find out exactly how unethical their food is.
