The Marquis of Westminster

The Marquis of Westminster

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

Warwick Way is something of a pub enclave, with three worthy stops within the distance you could hurl a pint (not that you would). The Marquis is our favourite. The dimly lit ground-floor bar feels like a former living room.

It's convivial, with several different corners to explore, including a fishy room at the back. A quintet of draught ales offer the familiar and not so familiar — the scalps of former guest ales, in the form of beer mats, adorn the bar top. Wine drinkers are also well served.

Up the spiral staircase, you'll find a relaxed, intimate dining space serving from a longer-than-usual menu. Main courses average about £13. The basement cocktail bar reckons to be 'the best function room in Central London', but we've yet to sample its delights.

Curiously, the eponymous Marquis of Westminster was teetotal, a supporter of the temperance movement, and instrumental in closing 40 beer houses in his constituency of Mayfair. Sweet revenge.
