The Wheatsheaf

The Wheatsheaf

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

From without, you'd swear this place was going to get all gastro on your ass, but step inside and the Wheatsheaf is a really down-to-earth boozer. It looks smart, though. Leatherette seating is a posh, coppery shade of green, while the high-back wooden chairs are only slightly mis-matched. The bar area is also tastefully set, culminating in a set of powerful Romanesque arches on the lead up to the separate restaurant area and small back garden.

We popped by at 5.30pm to find ourselves very much in the transition between all-day drinkers working their way out of the door (in one case, with some help from a bar man), and a fresh influx of younger drinkers making their way from Tooting Bec tube across the road.

The beer choice here is excellent, with five tempting options on cask and around 15 varieties on keg. It all seems to be working out rather well, considering that the place was almost turned into a Tesco in 2013. It's now an 'Asset of Community Value', and certainly seems to be getting the community usage.

Quiz night is Sunday.
