Holborn Whippet

Holborn Whippet

Part of our Best Pubs in London microsite. See if we've included your local.

In an area dominated by traditional pubs like the Princess Louise and Cittie of Yorke, the Holborn Whippet makes a refreshing change.

Like the titular hound, the drinking space is kept sleek and minimal, with mostly plain white walls and large plate glass windows. In fact, it looks more like an Edwardian booking office than a pub — a neat match for the ornate Sicilian Avenue on which it is situated.

Even the pumps are devoid of clutter, with a blackboard of tipples providing the information. The selection of ales is exemplary, with numerous casks and kegs from lesser-known craft breweries. Because the range changes so often, the pub advertises its current offering on its website.

Food is of the pizza-burger variety, though most of the tables are so narrow we wonder how a plate might fit on. There are only two downsides to this place — it can get extremely crowded towards the end of the week; and the toilets feel like a bit of an afterthought.
