Baring Hall Hotel

Baring Hall Hotel

In August 2009, a fire gutted the downstairs part of the Baring Hall Hotel. Two years later, there were plans to turn it into shops and flats. In early 2014, Antic re-opened the pub, but apparently decided to leave some of the battle scars in place. It's the only reason we can think of for the ceiling looking like it does.

Perhaps the only 'decent' pub in Grove Park, it is what you'd expect an Antic pub to be. Shabby-chic in decor, excellent and unusual ales on tap (one of which made us burp gently all night, to which we offer sincere apologies to our companions) and top grub. Particularly the veggie burger which, thinking about it, may have contributed to the burping.

If you live in the area you doubtless already know about this place. If you're just passing through, it's right opposite the station and is well worth hopping off a train to grab a pint in. And do the quiz, if you're there on Tuesdays.

Also, if your parents' wedding photos have gone missing, try the ladies' loo. The whole place is decorated with one particular 1960s nuptials and we can't decide if it's lovely or weird.

We visited on Halloween, it's not normally that cobwebby.

'Authentic' ceiling.

Not sure we're keen on this new trend for showing what the beers look like. It puts novices off asking for a taste, and let's face it, looks like urine samples

Someone's wedding photos decorated the ladies' loo.
