The Fox

The Fox

This pub was editorially chosen for inclusion by Londonist.

The Grand Union Canal and the River Brent twine into one at the southern end of Hanwell Lock. It's a remarkable area, peppered with 18th and 19th century industrial remnants — well worth a half-day's exploration of anyone's time. If you're following the canal/river up from Brentford, The Fox makes for the perfect respite. It's the perfect suburban pub. Warm and inviting, a friend to walkers, dogs and locals alike, you can't help but grin as you walk inside.

We lost count of the number of real ales on draught. It's lots, and with a nice mix of old faithfuls and newcomer brands. Its beer credentials are mounted behind the bar, including six regional best pub awards from CAMRA. Throw in a couple of fireplaces, a large beer garden, a regular pub quiz and you'll be wanting to move to the area. The food is of the cheap-and-cheerful variety, but that's a good thing. Too many similar pubs have gone down the gastro route, jazzing up their food, but losing something of their individuality. Not here. Long may the Fox remain fantastic.
